Swimming legend Susie O'Neill breaks world record at 50 years of age

Susie O'Neill has broken a world record at the age of 50 in a triumphant return to international swimming at the World Masters Swimming Championships in Japan.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist won the 50m butterfly, breaking the world record and championship record for the 50-54 age group.

She touched out Britain’s Michelle Ware record by 0.52sec, with a time of 29.08 seconds, securing gold for her age group.

The swimmer nicknamed Madame Butterfly during her career, proved that she's still got it after winning her first competition and butterfly race since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

This comes two months after she set another record when she swam an excellent time at the Masters championships in Queensland as part of her 50th birthday celebrations, which qualified her for the world championships.

She agreed to compete at the relay event in the Masters championships to celebrate her 50th, with her Nova 106.9 Breakfast co-hosts Ash Bradnam and David Lutteral, plus one of their listeners.

In a post-swim interview O'Neill told her co-hosts: “I felt like vomiting at the end to be honest,”

“In the olden days I was nervous before the race, but I was calmer when I went out behind the block. This was like the opposite. I was calm before, but as I walked out behind the blocks I got a bit dishevelled compared to normal. Really jittery.

“It was time to go out, and my goggles had come apart. My hands were shaking - and I couldn’t put my goggles on because they came apart at the nose-piece.

“So, I had to get a lady to help me, and the girl that I ended up just beating was trying to calm me down. My nerves hit me really, really badly.”

“I got a massive surge of adrenaline, and I reckon it helped me,” she said.

O'Neill added that she initially didn't realise she had broken a record.

“I wasn’t sure when I first finished.”

Despite the challenges, the swimming legend relished in the camaraderie with a few swimmers that she had met in the past.

“I met so many people in the marshalling area that I knew. For example, there was a Canadian girl in that race, and we swapped clothes in 1989 when we came to Japan for the Pan Pacific Games,” she said.

The swimmer told Channel 7’s Sunrise that this was a one-off and she has no plans to continue racing.

Images: Instagram

"What a FIGHTER!": Susan Boyle reveals secret health scare during comeback

Singing sensation Susan Boyle surprised her fans with an unexpected appearance on Britain’s Got Talent for the competition’s extravagant final.

Boyle, who had previously appeared on the show herself in 2009, took to the stage with the cast of the West End’s Les Miserables for a performance of the song ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ - the same one she auditioned with when she was a competitor.

And fans were treated to one more song, with the ensemble joining Boyle for a rendition of ‘Do You Hear The People Sing?’ too.

Once the crowd’s delighted applause had quietened, Britain’s Got Talent hosts Ant and Dec approached Boyle, gushing over her as they welcomed her back to the stage.

“It is so lovely to see you,” Dec declared. “It’s hard to believe you appeared on this show in 2009 - fourteen years ago. How does it feel to be back at BGT?”

“It feels great,” Susan told him, to further cheering from the audience.

She went on to share that the whole affair was “extra special” to her, before revealing that “last April there, I suffered a minor stroke.”

The theatre was quiet, everyone taken by surprise, before Boyle announced that she’d “fought like crazy to get back on stage, and I have done it.”

As Dec shared that they were “thrilled” to hear of her triumphant return, cheers rang out once again, and applause echoed throughout the room in celebration of Boyle.

When judge Simon Cowell - who was present for Boyle’s audition as well - was asked how it felt to see her back on the stage, he noted that it was “unbelievable”.

“Susan, we owe you so much,” he said, “and I knew you weren't well, but if anyone was going to come back, you were going to come back, because we wouldn't be the same without you. You are amazing."

And when clips from her performance, and following reveal, made it online, fans wasted no time in sharing their love and support for the singer.

“Huge huge respect for Susan Boyle,” one wrote. “Post stroke and absolutely smashing it on BGT tonight! Incredible!”

“Good for her! Great to see her back!” another said. “Never ever be defined by an illness or disability. Never.”

“Aww! Susan Boyle is an absolute superstar in every sense of the word, so humble,” one gushed. “It’s so good to see her back with her microphone!”

And as someone else put it, “bless Susan Boyle, she spent her entire life not realising her full potential as a West End singer, to then go on to be one of the biggest stars to come out of #BGT. Her performance tonight had passion; she has real HEART and her having a stroke last year - what a FIGHTER!”

⭐ STAGEY SMILE OF THE DAY ⭐

Here's Lucie Jones & Susan Boyle performing "I Dreamed A Dream" from Les Misérables, for the BGT grand final 🇫🇷 ✨ X x x pic.twitter.com/nmIB5eo29c

— Theatre Fan (@ShaunTossell) June 4, 2023

Images: Twitter

“He just makes you proud”: AFL star's stunning Anzac Day speech

Darcy Moore, captain of Collingwood Football Club, has been praised across the board for the words he delivered in the wake of his team’s Anzac Day win against Essendon.

The Magpies had a lot to celebrate after their comeback win in front of a record-breaking 95,179 person crowd, but it was Moore’s post-game speech that is fixed in the mind of supporters, and anyone else who had had the honour of hearing what he had to say.

Moore was accepting the Anzac Day trophy before he gave his speech, and opened with a round of thanks for the thousands of fans - Collingwood and Essendon alike - who had made the trip to be with them on such a momentous day.

“First of all, I want to give a massive thank you to the 95,000 fans who are here, [a] record-breaking crowd,” he said. “No matter whether you wear the black and white stripes or the red sash, this game is about so much more than four points. So you turning up today and showing your support means a lot and we’re incredibly proud to play our part in this game.

“To Essendon, both Andrew [McGrath] and the team - as well as the broader club - thank you so much for making this event what it is.

“It means a lot to us that we can come together with your football club and commemorate the sacrifice of not just the Anzacs, but all servicemen and women who served Australia all around the world. So thank you to the Essendon Football Club.

“I want to thank and mention all men and women who are serving our country’s interests, both at home and abroad, in war and in peacekeeping operations. It means a lot to me and the team and the whole club that we can commemorate your service and your sacrifice today by doing what we do. So thank you for your service.

“To the veterans - there are over 600,000 veterans in this country who have returned from service - we also extend our thanks to you for your sacrifice and we hope that again, doing what we do today, somehow honours your legacy and what you’ve done for our country. Thank you to those 600,000 veterans as well.

“And then finally, to the families of those serving and those veterans. Too often, your stories go untold and on behalf of the Collingwood footy club, we just want to acknowledge the pain of war that runs through so many families across this country.

“It’s a real honour for us to run out here and play our game in honour of you and your service. So to the families of those who have served, thank you so much for your service.”

The Fox Footy panellists covering the game were some of the first to declare their appreciation for Moore’s sentiments, and were in agreement that the Collingwood captain had displayed some exemplary character - on and off the pitch.

“In addition to being one of the best defenders in the game, he is a very thoughtful and eloquent young man. That speech was, frankly, incredible the way he spoke and thought about so many people. It was something we’ll remember for a long time,” Sarah Jones, Fox Footy host, said.

“One of the best speeches I’ve ever heard on this day,” declared triple Coleman medallist Jason Dunstall.

“He made it all about the occasion and the sacrifice that has been made for us, well before us,” he went on to tell Fox Footy. “I thought that was brilliant.

“The words that he chose summed it up perfectly.”

And in the words of former AFL player David King, “he just makes you proud of our code when you hear a young man speak like that. Full credit, Darcy Moore.”

Images: Getty

"I still don't know what I did wrong": Susan Sarandon reflects on breaking royal protocol

Susan Sarandon has opened up her brush with royalty, and how she was slammed for "breaking royal protocol".

The 76-year-old actress recalled attending the Royal Windsor Cup at Guards Polo Club with her youngest son in 2018, where she met Queen Elizabeth.

Sarandon said she was given conflicting advice about what to do when she came face-to-face with Her Majesty, as she explains in the documentary Portrait of the Queen.

"[When] I got to to England and my friends were like, 'do not bow, whatever you do don't bow, that is so passe'," Sarandon recalled.

"You know, there's this push and pull about whether and how much respect you're going to give to the royal family and whatever. They said to me 'don't bow. Do not bow' and I thought, 'well, I'm going to be respectful'."

When the day arrived, Sarandon and her son Miles were seated in a different section, where she received a briefing from a royal aide before the Queen arrived for their meeting.

"They said: 'Don't ask her any questions. [If] she talks to you, it's okay but don't ask her anything. And this is what you have to do, you know, bow when she comes'," Sarandon recalls.

"So I'm all stressed out, I think, 'am I going to bow or am I not going to bow?'

"So anyway, the moment came when they finally said: 'Okay, it's your turn to meet the Queen'. And here is what happened - she was sitting down!

"So of course, I had to bend over to shake her hand and so it looked like a curtsy. So, at the end of the day, I kind of did bow and the headlines still said after all of that, that I had gone against protocol somehow. I still don't know what I did wrong."

At the time, the British press condemned the actress for breaking royal protocol by initiating a handshake with the Queen.

Despite the semantics of their meeting, Sarandon said her brief encounter with Her Majesty was perfectly pleasant.

"She was lovely to me," Sarandon says.

"I don't think we had a very long conversation. I think it was kind of just 'Oh, it's so nice to meet you'. And, and I said 'it's so nice to meet you'. And I remembered that you can't ask her anything."

"So that definitely puts a damper on your conversation because she has to be in charge of everything."

Prince William's godmother resigns amid racism row

Prince William's godmother and Queen Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting has resigned from her royal position after making "unacceptable comments" towards a black guest at Buckingham Palace.

The incident reportedly took place earlier this week, when Camilla, Queen Consort was joined by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Queen Rania of Jordan at an event to highlight domestic violence survivors and charities.

Ngozi Fulani, chief executive of Sistah Space, was invited to the afternoon reception at the palace through Safe Lives, a charity the Queen Consort is patron of.

The next day, Fulani took to social media where she detailed an exchange with Lady Susan Hussey, saying the woman repeatedly asked where she was "really from", saying "this event remains a blur after the violation".

Mixed feelings about yesterday's visit to Buckingham Palace. 10 mins after arriving, a member of staff, Lady SH, approached me, moved my hair to see my name badge. "I can't feel this yet": Pink's emotional tribute to late father

Pink has shared a heartbreaking tribute to her late father, Jim Moore, on what would have been his 76th birthday.

The singer shared a photo of her father’s grave on social media, along with a message for him.

In the photo, the singer placed a stack of doughnuts in front of a temporary plaque and a small American flag, with a single candle on top of the stack.

Pink’s poetic message touched on the changing nature of the relationship she had with her dad, as well as the grief she feels.

“Dad. I only knew you for 42 years this time,” she began the caption.

“That’s a long time / That’s not that long / When I reach into my memories of us to try to understand our relationship I remember our fights first. Screaming. Crying. Misunderstanding.”

“And then like a parallel universe simultaneously I remember the way you would pat my hand and say ‘aww’ to remind me to be gentler, to remind me that I was nicer than that thing I said.”

She continued to describe the conflicting nature of their relationship, writing, “How you would tell me that the world was out to get me, but that the world was full of animals that needed our help.

“Nature that needed to be revered. Silence that needed to be listened to. You taught me that no fight was too small, except the ones that chipped away at your soul.”

The singer shared how she was continuing to process her father’s death.

“I don’t even know that I can handle the cold hard truth that I miss you yet,” she wrote.

“I wanna act like this is one of those times that I’m busy and not calling. Dear Evan Hansen is an inspiring and entertaining film

When Dear Evan Hansen was released on Broadway over five years ago it became a generation defining Broadway phenomenon. Now we have the film version with Ben Platt reprising the main role and he does this with breathtaking results.

Some critics have complained it's not realistic for Platt to play Evan Hansen in the film version because Platt’s now 27 years old and it’s difficult for him to play an anxious, isolated high schooler. But does it matter that he’s a bit older now?

Well, from an audience's point of view, it doesn’t and when Platt starts to sing those amazing songs, we can see why he won an Emmy and a Grammy for the Broadway production. As well, we have the song-writing team from La La Land and The Greatest Showman writing the songs and everything works.

Plus, the serious nature of this film – the fact it deals with teenage suicide and how hard it is for some people to simply get by – makes it an important film and one which could help a lot of people. This makes Dear Evan Hansen an important and inspiring film.

The storyline

The gist of the story is that Evan Hansen is a high school loner, awkward and inept with his only friend being the equally nerdy Jared (Nik Dodani).

He shows up on the first day of school with a cast after breaking his arm, and he’s been instructed by his therapist to write “Dear Evan Hansen” letters to himself in order to work out his issues connecting with other people.

Fellow student Connor Murphy (Colton Ryan) has a run-in with Evan and grabs one of said letters from a printer. A few days later, Connor’s mother Cynthia and stepfather Larry (Amy Addams, Danny Pino) show up at Evan’s school with the letter saying that Connor committed suicide, and they’ve determined that the letter “to Evan” was his suicide note.

Instead of telling them the truth, Evan concocts an elaborate lie about being friends with Connor in order to sooth his parents’ misgivings about his death. In order to maintain that illusion, Evan continues to lie to them as well as to Connor’s sister, Zoe (Kaitlyn Dever from Book Smart), and his lie just snowballs.

Pretty soon, the school’s social justice activist Alana (Amandla Stenberg) has up the Connor Project so that others who feel alone can feel seen and heard, and Evan has become hugely popular at school.

But this doesn’t last forever and Hansen has to face up to his lie later on.

The singing really does work

Although a lot of the focus of the singing is on Platt and his quite beautiful voice, each of the other primary cast have some amazing singing moments, whether it’s Stenberg doing a song about feeling anonymous like Connor or the song, Requiem, which shows off the amazing singing prowess of Devo, Pino, and even Adams.

Julianne Moore, who plays Evan’s hardworking single mother, even gets an absolutely epic number towards the end which will get the waterworks flowing if nothing beforehand has done that job.

The showstopper is You Will be Found

The movie’s absolutely showstopper is the number You Will be Found and it’s another great example of how the songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul of La La Land fame translate so well to the screen. In fact, this song alone shows you why many people became obsessed with the Broadway version of Dear Evan Hansen.

The film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Wonder).and he shows here he has a strong grasp on social media, cyber bullying, viral videos, and even cancel culture and how it destroys people, including families.

Dear Evan Hansen will be in cinemas by December 9

The film brings out many emotions and one of the reasons is because as we watch it, we can relate to so much of what Hansen is going through. The characters and the story feel very real, which is as much a testament to Chbosky as a filmmaker, but also his cast and the people behind the original musical.

There’s a good reason why Dear Evan Hansen was such a success on Broadway, and a great deal of that is retained by the movie.

Dear Evan Hansen will be showing in cinemas by December 9 and there’ve been no announcements as to whether it will stream.

Images: UPI

Julianne Moore calls for “sexist” term to be scrapped

Actress Julianne Moore is questioning how women are viewed and talked about as they age, calling for one particular term to be dropped completely.

Moore, who turned 60 in December, criticised those who use the phrase “ageing gracefully” in the latest issue of As If magazine, according to People.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Julianne Moore (@juliannemoore)

he described the term, especially when used while speaking about women, as “totally sexist”.

“There’s so much judgement inherent in the term ‘ageing gracefully’,” Moore told the publication.

“Is there an ungraceful way to age? No one has an option about ageing, so it’s not a positive or negative thing, it just is,” she said.

Moore questioned the perception that women in particular had some kind of influence over, so they could opt in or out of doing it “gracefully”.

“It’s part of the human condition, so why are we always talking about it as if it is something that we have control over?” she asked.

Stressing the value of “inner growth”, Moore argued that people should be more concerned with how they continue to evolve as they age instead.

“We are given a narrative as children that we keep growing through school, maybe go to college then, after school is finished, the idea of growth is done … But we have all this life left to live,” she said.

“How do we continue to challenge ourselves, to interest ourselves, learn new things, be more helpful to other people, be the person that your friends and family need or want? How do we continue to evolve? How do we navigate life to have even deeper experiences?”

Moore also endorsed a comment Helen Mirren made last year during an interview for O, The Oprah Magazine, where she hit back against the phrase “anti-ageing”.

“Ageing is a requirement of life: You either grow old or die young,” Mirren said during the interview.

“I take great issue with the term, actually. You can’t avoid ageing. The way I see it, you have two choices in life: You can either get older, or die,” the 75-year-old said at the time.

“And I want to continue to see what life has in store. I think about Kurt Cobain and all that he missed. I mean, how sad is it that he never knew about GPS.”

Image: Julianne Moore / Instagram

Family of Captain Sir Tom Moore announce fundraising event to mark 101st birthday

Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family is continuing his legacy by announcing a new fundraising event on what would have been his 101st
birthday.

The WWII veteran made global headlines when he spent his quarantine days walking 100 laps around his back garden ahead of his 100th
birthday.

He ended up raising £33 million (AUD $60 million) for the National Health Service (NHS) – breaking the Just Giving record for the largest sum of money raised through a single campaign.

To mark his birthday on April 30, the family have launched The Captain Tom 100.

"We want people to go crazy and create their own 100 - a challenge around the number 100," his daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore told BBC.

"Because he was 100 and he was so proud to be 100."

Image: Getty

Ms Ingram-Moore went on to say: "I really hope people see this [100 challenge] for what it is, which is an absolute chance to bring joy, put money back into charities and support the Captain Tom Foundation, which after all is the legacy of hope that he's left us."

The family is encouraging people to get out and raise money by doing 100 of something, whether it is baking 100 cupcakes or climbing 100 steps.

"It is probably my deepest regret that he is not here but I can do nothing about that. What we can do is deliver something sensational on his birthday," Ms Ingram-Moore told The Sun.

"My father was so proud to have made it to 100 and so much happened in that year that he was one hundred. It's a great number, so we felt compelled to keep it.

"One hundred is synonymous with him around the world so it had to be 100."

Captain Tom Moore died on February 2 due to COVID-19 complications – the very cause he raised money for.
